New school arrangements due to Covid-19

Posted on: 23/09/2020

Dear Parents and Carers,

Firstly again I hope that you and your loved ones are well. We continue to live in turbulent times but at Thomas More the term continues very well. Each day the pupils commit to their learning and the atmosphere in the school is calm and purposeful. Long may it last.

I have a few points to update you on all of which are very important at this time.

Early Finish on a Friday

We are facing a real problem on Fridays with regard to transport. Our pupils are taking over an hour to even get on a bus because of the early finishes at neighbouring schools. This is compounded by the reduction in buses and it is doing our pupils no good having to wait so long to begin their journeys home. It is another side effect of the impact on society of the coronavirus.

To address this matter, I am going to slightly rearrange the school day this Friday, on a trial basis, to see whether we can avoid the problem.

In brief, Friday’s lessons will be 50 minutes long and form time in the morning will be 10 minutes. This will allow us to finish no later than 1:45. Year 7 and 8 will finish at 1:30pm.

I hope this will give our pupils chance of catching a bus without a long wait. I will review this with the senior team after this Friday and let you know if it will become the pattern.

The school day will look like this

Form Time

8:20 – 8:30

Period One

8:30 – 9:20

Period Two

9:20 – 10:10

10:10 – 10:30

Period Three

10:30 – 11:20

Period Four

11:20 – 12:10

12:10 - 12:55

  • Year 7 and 8 – 11:40
  • Year 10 and 11 – 12:10
  • Year 9 – 12:30
  • Sixth Form – corresponding times
  • 11:50 for ten minutes
  • 12:40 for fifteen minutes

Period Five

12:55 – 1:45

  • Year 7 and 8 to finish at 1:30
  • Year 9 to finish at 1:40
  • Year 10 and 11 to finish at 1:45

Please can you stress to your children that they need to go straight home. Obviously, if they hang around Purley for the extra time, it will make no difference and they will face the same problem catching a bus.

Absence from School

Please be sure to tell us why your child is not in school if they are not here. This is really important. You can either email or phone the school and follow through the options to the attendance office. Also, please be sure to complete and return the N code forms when you receive them so that your child’s register can be updated and the absence can be authorised.

Wet Weather

It is likely that we will not be able to enjoy such wonderful weather indefinitely. In the event of wet weather it will be best if pupils have a raincoat or a small foldable umbrella with them so they can stay outside rather than crowding inside.

Our Open Evenings

Our Open Evening will be virtual via the school website. Please do encourage friends and family to engage with the video and presentation to see what a wonderful education is on offer at Thomas More. It will be put on the school website on October 6th. The Sixth Form Open Evening will also be virtual and that will go on the website on the 4th November.

Face coverings in buses

Please can you remind your children, as we are, that the rules about face coverings on buses applies to them as well as everyone else. We have had some cases where pupils have not been allowed on to the buses without a face covering so please remind them and supply them with face coverings. We also have face masks in school if necessary.

Kind regards and all best wishes,

Mr. Walters
