Applied Science

Applied Science is offered as a two year L3 BTEC Extended Certificate option only following the Edexcel specification.

Would you enjoy learning about how things work, how science affects the world around you and how it is used in the workplace and in industry? Do you enjoy learning about science through a variety of different teaching methods including practical work, presentations and group discussion? Do you wish to study Science rather than the separate A Level subjects? If so, then a BTEC Level 3 in Applied Science is the course for you.

Student profile
We are looking for students who are lively and enthusiastic, and who enjoy discussion and group work. You will be willing to learn to work independently, using your initiative, in order to research your chosen topics and you will develop your communication skills through discussion and presentations. You will be hard working and organised as the coursework deadlines are demanding.

Assessment
Unit 1 1 hour 30 minutes by external exam
Unit 2 Internally assessed task
Unit 3 Externally assessed practical
Unit 8 (Optional unit) Internally assessed task.

Entry Requirements
5+ in English Language and 5+ in Maths
and either 5-5 in Combined Science.

Career Prospects
The vast majority of BTEC Applied Science students gain careers in medical laboratories, biomedical science, forensics, research, teaching or nursing.
